Hello, I’m Alan. Welcome to my website!

I’m originally from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. I had a small workshop on the main street I called “Isle of Mull Leather” where I handmade and sold small leather goods which I crafted from hides of traditionally pit tanned leather: bridle leather (the process here) and using natural vegetable tanned leather – the latter, a leather that isn’t sealed or coloured. I carved and tooled personal designs into the leather using a special knife and embossing tools and hand saddle stitched everything I made (and I still do). Cutting the hide, moulding, dying, sealing, stitching and edging, all using traditional leather working tools and skills.

I had about six to seven happy years in my workshop until my family and I decided, about the end of 2020, it was time to try somewhere new. I closed my workshop in Tobermory, renamed my business IOM Leather, started a new online shop and we made our way to the Latvian countryside where we’ll be building our own home, are growing our own food and will be building a new, small workshop for my leather working.
