Hello, I’m Alan. Welcome to my shop!

I’m originally from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. I had a small workshop on the main street I called “Isle of Mull Leather” where I custom made and sold small leather goods from hides of traditionally pit tanned bridle leather (see the process here) and using natural vegetable tanned leather – a leather that isn’t sealed or coloured. I carved and tooled personal designs into the leather using a special knife and embossing tools and hand saddle stitched everything I made (and I still do). Cutting the hide, moulding, dying, sealing, stitching and edging, all using traditional leather working tools and skills.

I had six or so happy years in my workshop until my family and I decided at the end of 2020 it was time to try somewhere new. I closed my workshop in Tobermory, renamed my business IOM Leather, started an online Etsy.com shop and an online shop at iom-leather.square.site and made our way to the Latvian countryside where we’re building our own home, growing our own food and, of course, have a small workshop for my leather working. Which brings us to the next chapter…and the story continues…
